Almost a Finish

Not quite, but close enough to suit me.

Back in January, I committed along with Thea at California Dreamin’ to a start a month.  Thea called it New Beginnings and set up a linky party for any and all who would like to join in.  And I, personally, committed to a finish a month (not necessarily the finish of the one started, if that makes sense to anybody).

Well, life intervened around here, and all my plans got put on hold for a bit and then it took another bit before I got going again.

So my Jan Feb March start is the same now as it was back then:004

And my Jan Feb March finish (almost) is a quilt that I’d had sandwiched for quite some time, trying to decided first how I wanted to quilt it, and then getting up the courage to tackle it:

057

Wacky stars, echo-quilted with dark thread on top:

057

And shiny gold thread on the black flannel backing:DSCN0323

All that’s left is to sew down the binding, and then clean up all the lint on that black LOL.

So I’m quite happy with this progress right now.  And in a few days, I’ll share my April start.  So good to be back on track!

And life is kind of back to normal.  Baby Gracie is still hanging in there; she’s 32 weeks now and can technically arrive any time safely, but we’d be happy for her to wait another month or so and gain some weight.  Her mama is still on restricted activity, but out of bed and doing fine.  The other grandma and I have almost finished up the baby room sewing, and I have a couple other projects to work on over the next few weeks.

Grandchild #2, Peanut, is 13 weeks now and Mama is starting to feel a little better.  We got the US picture last week, and all looks good:

1549499_10152761410363266_1799264925_n

And there are lots of plans for sewing projects for this little one, to keep me busy over the summer.

Grizz and I have been doing some around-the-house work, in preparation for his second knee surgery and then restricted activity for a while.  Surgery is scheduled for Friday, and we’re feeling confident that he’ll go through this one as well as he did the last one.  So the yard is cleaned up, the windows are washed, the appliances have been pulled out and cleaned behind.  And the sun is shining!  What more could we want?

Happy blessings!                         Peg

More Than a Social Network

Facebook is a source for learning

Most mornings, I start my day by getting in touch with the world via my computer.  Emails first, to make sure there’s nothing urgent that will need my attention.   Once I’ve dealt with all of those, I head on over to Facebook – again to touch bases with family and friends, many of whom I rarely see.  It really is a great place to keep up with happenings, who’s on vacation, who’s having children and grandchildren, who’s changing jobs or retiring.

But it’s the education I get there that fascinates me.

Like – 20 ways to use Coke (for other than drinking and upsetting your stomach):

1. Removes grease stains from clothing and fabric
2. Removes rust; methods include using fabric dipped in Coke, a sponge or even aluminum foil. Also loosens rusty bolts
3. Removes blood stains from clothing and fabric.
4. Cleans oil stains from a garage floor; let the stain soak, hose off.
5. Kills slugs and snails; the acids kills them.
6. Cleans burnt pans; let the pan soak in the Coke, then rinse.
7. Descales a kettle (same method as with burnt pans)
8. Cleans car battery terminals by pouring a small amount of Coke over each one.
9. Cleans your engine; Coke distributors have been using this technique for decades.
10. Makes pennies shine; soaking old pennies in Coke will remove the tarnish.
11. Cleans tile grout; pour onto kitchen floor, leave for a few minutes, wipe up.
12. Dissolves a tooth; Use a sealed container…takes a while but it does work.
13. Removes gum from hair; dip into a small bowl of Coke, leave a few minutes. Gum will wipe off.
14. Removes stains from vitreous china.
15. Got a dirty pool? Adding two 2-liter bottles of Coke clears up rust.
16. You can remove (or fade) dye from hair by pouring diet Coke over it.
17. Remove marker stains from carpet. Applying Coke, scrubbing and then clean with soapy water will remove marker stains.
18. Cleans a toilet; pour around bowl, leave for a while, flush clean.
19. Coke and aluminum foil will bring Chrome to a high shine.
20. Strips paint off metal furniture. Soak a towel in Coke and lay it on the paint surface.

Recipes that will for sure blow your diet:

A SLICE OF HEAVEN CAKE!
1 package devil's food chocolate cake or german choc. cake mix
1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk

Bake the cake according to directions in 9x13 inch pan. Cool for 5 minutes, using the handle of a wooden spoon poke holes into cake, then let cake cool for abit about an 1/2 hour til warm. Slowly pour sweetened milk over cake, letting it soak into holes, then drizzle caramel over the cake.
Let cake cool completely (you may refrigerate it to cool faster just cover well). Top cake with cool whip, decorate with candy & drizzle with caramel!!

Monday’s ‘Musement

What do you do when the more you try to straighten things out the more you need to straighten things out!

Grizz would be the first one to tell you that I have a touch of OCD.  I like things neat and tidy and in their place.  Years ago, we built a dog run, and put a dog house in it.  We laid down the paving stones, got them squarely in place, set the dog house on top of them in a temporary spot while we put the fencing around, got everything done cleaned up all the tools and debris, and moved the dog house into one corner.  I looked back at it with great satisfaction…..until I noticed the dog house wasn’t squared up with the fence!!  Just had to go back and make it square!

The last couple of days, I’ve been cleaning out kitchen cupboards – the more I tidy, the more I tidy.  It seems to be a never-ending cycle.  But I move one thing, and ten other things have to be moved to accommodate.  Eventually I just have to force myself to stop – enough already!

In relationships, too, I like things all in a row, neat and tidy, and just the way I expect them.  No surprises!

Wouldn’t it be nice if life was like that – we could put things in place, the right place, and they’d stay there, we could know exactly how everybody is going to act and react and be prepared for whatever is going to happen!  Much as we can never make a picture of the Leaning Tower be straight in all ways, we can never have a pathway in life that’s perfectly straight.

That’s why we need faith – faith in ourselves, in each other, in God who will see us through the tough times, the crooked paths, the messes.

Wishing you all a faith that will see you through!   Blessings, Peg

Oops!

I was wrong – I got two of the states mixed up!  Thought I’d checked them all very carefully, but……

Anyway – if you looked at the US map answers before this, please know that Minnesota and Wisconsin are incorrectly labeled.  I’ve put the corrected map on the original post

As I re-read the post, I’m reminded of the song, I’ve Been Everywhere Man!  How I wish that was true, but the places I’ve been and the memories they’ve given me are precious, and a reason to celebrate!

Baby in the House!

DD-A and LV came for a quick visit.  They’re on their way to join friends for a pre-wedding celebration, and had a couple of days to spend with us.  What a treat to have a baby in the house again!

Bottles on the counter:

128

A playmat on the floor:

119

We converted the en-suite bath into a nursery for a quiet place for LV to sleep, and then spent our time playing with her:129125

LV did well with her first plane trip, and adjusting to a new house for a couple of days.  Her mama had a much harder time – first their luggage didn’t arrive with them, then when we got to her in-laws’ house to borrow a vehicle the keys couldn’t be found (they were with the in-laws in California), then LV wasn’t quite prepared to switch time zones.  But she’ll be joined later today by DSIL-J, and she’ll have night-time help again.  BTW – the luggage arrived a few hours later, and the car keys were sent by UPS and arrived the next day, so it all did work out but made for a few stressful hours.

While they were here, we pulled out a couple of photo albums and discovered that LV is a little clone of her mama.  How we had forgotten!  It was quite amazing to see.

We are on our way tomorrow for a wedding in Alberta, and some time with family and friends, including the expectant parents DS-J and DDIL-K.  Baby is due in just over a week, so our phone sleeps with us every night!

Happy baby times!             Blessings, Peg

Family Times

As our children were growing, we had regular family get-together’s for all the major holidays and everybody’s birthdays.  But now that all of our children are adults, and we’re a little more scattered about, these times are a little less frequent.

So when we do have the chance, we thoroughly enjoy these times.  This past weekend was an opportunity.  Two families were camping at a nearby campground (Grizz and I waited too long to try to get a reservation), and the rest of us dropped in to visit – and eat, of course!

004

All efforts were made to try and keep cool, and we had to shuffle chairs around every so often to escape the heat of the sun.  But apparently it got cool enough late in the evening to have a campfire – by which time were home sitting in front of our own fans!

Happy family times!                    Blessings, Peg

Last One

Well, for Baby Eli, and certainly not forever.  But just finished up the last little project to take with us on our next trip, which will start in a couple of days.

First, here’s the project:

002

A little (30x20) wall hanging for above the crib.  And here’s a picture of the back, cute fabric I found in my stash, that I used for the sashing on the front, too:

003

And in a couple of days, we’re headed out for a trailer trip, that will include a stop to celebrate my parents’ 65th anniversary, and to Calgary to do the Highland Games (as well as visit that grandbaby, her parents, and the parents of the expected grandbaby – do I sound like a grandma, the babies have become the focus, their parents just apropos these days LOL!).

So while we’re away, Bonnie will head out to the sewing machine doctor for her annual checkup – she’s all packed and ready to go:

Happy finishes!                               Blessings, Peg

Wednesday’s Words and Hodgepodge

Wednesday again – Hump Day, especially for those who work Monday to Friday – and time once again to pause mid-week and share a few thoughts.  If you want to read others’ midweek thoughts, please click on the icon on my side-bar.

1. Are you settling for something?

Is it settling if you’ve adjusted and accepted the way things are?  If so, then I guess I’m settling.  We’ve been trying to sell our house for the last while, and for some reason it’s just not moving.  When we moved here, it was with the intent that it would be just until I finished working, and then we’d move out of the valley to a quieter life-style.  Over the years, two of our children moved to Alberta, and as we visited them, we fell in love with much of what Alberta has to offer.  I ‘retired’ 5 years ago, finished working 1 1/2 years ago – we’re still here!  We’re not sure why, we believe that God has a plan, just wishing we knew what it was.  But no matter what, we’re happy, healthy, having a good time in retirement.  So yes, settled – at least for now!  LOL

2.  It wasn't that long ago almost every store in the US locked doors and turned out lights on Thanksgiving Day. This year many will be open all day Thursday, giving shoppers a jump start on 'Black Friday'. In your opinion is this a good thing or a not so good thing? Will you be shopping on Thanksgiving Day?

I remember the days when we didn’t shop on Thanksgiving (in Canada a whole month earlier than the US), or on Easter, or on Christmas Day, or even on Sundays.  These were days to worship, to spend with family, to rest and relax.  Now……the world has changed!  But I still don’t shop on Thanksgiving or Easter or Christmas – or Black Friday, or Boxing Day or any other of the crazy sale days that happen out there.  Crowds and traffic and fighting through them all only to be disappointed in the sale offerings is just not for me.

3. Speaking of shopping...I saw a recent article on the twelve best shopping cities in the world. In order they are-New York, Tokyo, London, Kuala Lumpur, Paris, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Vienna, Dubai, Madrid, Milan, and Seoul.
Ever shopped in any of the cities listed? In which city would you most like to pull out the plastic or cold hard cash?

Never been to any of them – yet – but have always dreamed of shopping in New York.  Not sure why, because I really don’t like to shop, and really don’t like crowds, but it’s on the bucket list!  Maybe someday!

4. When did you last dine by candlelight?

Whoooo…..can’t even remember.  I often light candles at the dinner table when we have company, or for a special dinner at home with Grizz, but the times in our youth when I turned down (or off) the lights to enjoy the candles, I only heard about how we couldn’t see what we were eating.  So the lights stay on, even when the candles are lit!

5. What do you have too much of?

Is it ever possible to have too much of something???  Well, actually, I do have to have too much fat on my body, but then that’s because I enjoy all the other things of which maybe I have too much.

6. The Hunger Games...are you a fan? Did you read the book(s)? Will you/have you see the movie? Will you/have you seen Catching Fire?

Haven’t even tried any of them, although Grizz and some of our kids have thoroughly enjoyed them.  But then they just tell me that I wouldn’t like them, so I just ignore them.  Jennifer Chiaverini is much more my style.

7. Share your plans for Thanksgiving Day. The who, the where, the what..especially the what! As in what's for dinner? If you're one of my International visitors, whose homeland doesn't celebrate American Thanksgiving (the whole world doesn't ya know!) then still tell us your plans for Thursday.

As Thanksgiving Day in Canada is long past, I can only share what we did – a totally unusual TDay for us, as Grizz was just a few weeks past knee surgery, and we felt it would be more than he could handle to either have the whole gang in or to go out for the day.  We had a quiet dinner one evening with our DS2 and DDIL1, then another afternoon Grizz’s sister and husband came by for a visit.  Quiet, but nice – and a good decision, as Grizz really was still tiring quite quickly and experiencing a lot of pain at that time.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

This past week, I’ve spent a lot of time blog-hopping (Blogathon Canada and Quilting Blogger Blog Hop Party).  Lots of fun, lots of new blogger-friends.  And an added bonus – I’ve achieved a minor milestone of 150 (official) followers.  So happy to have followers, so happy to hear from them, so happy to be making new friends.  Welcome aboard all!

Happy blogging!              Blessings, Peg

A Legend Passes On

Just learned that Shirley Temple Black, famous child actor, later teen actor, then eventually a diplomat, has died.

I loved her movies as a child, and still enjoy watching one occasionally.  She was an amazingly talented, bright child, and brought such joy to so many lives, especially in the Depression years.  According to what I read, her talent and charming smile also saved Fox studio from bankruptcy – that’s a lot on a little girl’s shoulders.  Apparently she made as many as 11 films in a year at the start when she was but 5 or 6 years old.  And in 2006 was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award – well earned!

Some memorable photos:

A legend passes on – but we’ll still have her movies to watch over and over and over again.

Wednesday Words and Hodgepodge

Here it is Wednesday again.  Busy week, getting that quilt together, after suffering quilter’s block (more on that later).  If you want to read more Hodgepodge, follow the link on my sidebar.

1. What's something you're dealing with that might be described as tricky?

Tricky, huh?  Well, a quilt pattern that I’ve designed, and want to get done up to show you all – it’ll get there someday, making progress regularly.

2. What's your treat of choice?

Chocolate, always chocolate – in any form, in any amount!

3. Did you/will you carve a jack-o-lantern this month? Which real (living or dead) or fictional 'Jack' would you most like to meet in person? Why?

No pumpkin carving in this house any more.  As for a ‘Jack’ that I’d like to meet – how about Jack Klugman, always loved his acting.

4. In your opinion, what's the grossest sounding word in the English language?

‘Cackle’ comes to mind – just think of those witches hovering over those cauldrons, with who-knows-what in them!!  LOL!

5. When did your heart last skip a beat?

Happens every time my husband kisses me ‘that way’ .  Actually makes my heart skip just thinking about it!

6.  Monster Mash by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon or Ray Parker Jr.'s Ghostbusters...your favorite 'scary' tune?

Don’t pay a lot of attention to ‘tunes’, but what comes to mind is The Twilight Zone – noo noo noo noo.  Oh, man, now it’s going to be in my head all day!

7.  It was a dark and stormy night when__________________________

Drawing a blank on this one!

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Was all ready to show you the quilt top, sans borders, but when I looked at the picture, I saw a glaring mistake that I just can’t live with.  So today will be a frogging day – then when it’s back together correctly, and I have the borders on, I’ll show you.

In the meantime – here’s a picture of the dogwood tree in our back yard – glorious:

002

Have I said before how much I like fall colors?!?  Years ago, there was a Colors movement in fashion, and people held home parties just to discover what color-way suited them best.  Well, I’m a ‘fall’ person, but then just look at the color choices in my wardrobe, and one needs no checking of the wrist, draping of the scarves, or testing of the cosmetics to know that (about me at least).  Apparently, though, black is a color (or non-color) that I should never wear, but sometimes, there’s nothing for it but that ‘little black dress’.

Happy fall!                  Blessings, Peg

Wednesday’s Words and Hodgepodge

It’s that time of the week again.  If you want to join in or just read other Hodgepodge posts, click the link on my right-hand sidebar.

1. What lesson has failure taught you?

Mostly I think I’ve learned (sometimes not so well) that God is in charge, that He has a plan, that I need to leave it all in His hands.

2. What decision are you glad you made?

Only one?  Probably the best decision of my life was the choice to follow Jesus Christ – since then I have always been aware that if a door closes, He will open a window.

3. I've been a little bit surprised to see fully lit and decorated Christmas trees popping up for the past several weeks in friend's Instagram feeds. So tell the truth-is your tree up and decorated, and if so when did that happen? If not when will you be decking the halls?

Our tree is NOT up.  As much as I love Christmas and the decorations, I find that I get tired of them after a few weeks.  We always wait until First Advent to put up the Advent wreath, and then Dec. 1 to decorate the rest of the house.  This year, these happen to be the same day.  Our decorations stay up until Jan. 6, a Lutheran tradition from my mother-in-law, honoring the arrival of the Magi to the stable, and acknowledging the 12 days o Christmas.

4. Solitaire-poker-rummy-hearts-go fish-Old Maid...which game of cards would you most want to join?

Rummy!  We played it by the hour with my family and friends when I was growing up.  Now we play Pinochle with friends on a regular basis.  So much fun gathering around a table and playing a friendly game!

5. This question comes to you courtesy of a Facebook friend, who once upon a time had a blog...When you're feeling stressed do you snack a lot or are you more the 'can't eat' type?

I tend to eat – a really bad habit!

6. Have you ever reviewed a product or service online?  Was your review favorable or less than favorable?

I’ve done several, mostly when I’ve used an online service.  Sometimes favorable, sometimes not – depends on if my needs are met.  Not sure that anybody actually listens to these things though, because nothing seems to change, despite hearing others that agree with my thoughts.  Oh, well!

7. What was the best conversation you had yesterday?

At a strata meeting, we had a general conversation about our strata and our finances and future.  Lots of good news, and great camaraderie, even when some disagreed.  It was actually very pleasant.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

‘Nuff said!

Happy day!                  Blessings, Peg

Monday’s ‘Musement

Or walked into a room only to wonder what you were doing there?

Or started to say something only to realize you have no idea what you were talking about?

A number of years ago (and I really and truly was a lot younger then), I was at work, and looking for my reading glasses.  Not on my desk that I could see.  Not on my head that I could feel.  Not in any drawers that I opened.  I literally patted and lifted FLAT pieces of paper to see if they were underneath.  Walked around the office to check other desk space – nowhere to be seen.  I even walked down to the break room to see if I’d left them sitting there, even though I was sure I’d used them since my last break.  My co-worker asked me what I was looking for.  When I told her, she just pointed……….you’re not going to believe this one!

There they were hanging around my neck from the new glasses cords that I’d just put on that day!

I did not look this cool!  I did not feel this confident!  I just felt silly!

And the worst thing is – it’s getting worse!  You have no idea how many times in any given day I wander all over the house wondering where I put my glasses this time.  No idea how many times in any given day I have to retrace my steps to figure out what I was planning to do.  No idea how many times in any given day I start to say something and can’t remember what I was talking about!  No idea how many times in any given day I start one thing, think of something else I’d planned to do, and completely forget the first and go on to the second, only to stop again and start another project – so easily distracted.

Did you hear about the 3 elderly men, sitting around the table?  One says, ‘I’m going upstairs for a bath’, and heads out of the room.  He gets upstairs and calls down, ‘What did I come up here to do?’  The second says, ‘He’d forget his head if it wasn’t screwed on.  I better go help him.’  And he heads upstairs – part way there, he calls down, ‘Was I going up or coming down?’  The third sitting at the table, answers, ‘You were on your way up!’  Then, saying to himself, ‘I sure hope I never get as bad as those two, knock on wood,’ and he knocks on the table.  Immediately he stands up, heads toward the door, muttering, ‘Now who could that be?’

Then there’s the story of the elderly couple who went to visit their doctor, complaining that they were having a lot of difficulty remembering things.  The doctor suggested that they write things down, that might help them.  A few evenings later, they were watching TV, when the man said, ‘I’m going to get some ice cream.  Do you want some?’  The lady said that she’d like some, yes, and please put some nuts on top.  The man said that sounded good, and the lady said ‘add some chocolate sauce to that, and do you want to write it down so you don’t forget?’  The man scoffed and said he could surely remember ice cream with nuts and chocolate sauce.  The lady asked for some whipped cream also, and again suggested he write it all down, and again the man said he could surely remember this from the living room to the kitchen.  Several minutes later, he returned from the kitchen with a plate of scrambled eggs.  The lady looked at it and said, ‘I knew you’d forget the bacon!’

A few days ago, my DIL was here and looking at the jigsaw puzzle I’d been working on. She complimented me on continuing to use my brain to stave off Alzheimer’s. Well, not sure but I think maybe it’s here.

Guess I’ll go and……………….. I forget, what day is it, what do I have to do today???                    Blessings, Peg

Product Description
Aleksandr Nikitenko, descended from once-free Cossacks, was born into serfdom in provincial Russia in 1804. One of 300,000 serfs owned by Count Sheremetev, Nikitenko as a teenager became fiercely determined to gain his freedom. In this memorable and moving book, here translated into English for the first time, Nikitenko recollects the details of his childhood and youth in servitude as well as the six-year struggle that at last delivered him into freedom in 1824. Among the very few autobiographies ever written by an ex-serf, Up from Serfdom provides a unique portrait of serfdom in nineteenth-century Russia and a profoundly clear sense of what such bondage meant to the people, the culture, and the nation. Rising to eminence as a professor at St Petersburg University, former serf Nikitenko set about writing his autobiography in 1851, relying on his own diaries (begun at the age of fourteen and maintained throughout his life), his father's correspondence and documents, and the stories that his parents and grandparents told as he was growing up. He recalls his town, his schooling, his masters and mistresses, and the utter capriciousness of a serf's existence, illustrated most vividly by his father's lurching path from comfort to destitution to prison to rehabilitation. Nikitenko's description of the tragedy, despair, unpredictability, and astounding luck of his youth is a compelling human story that brings to life as never before the experiences of the serf in Russia in the early 1800s.
