I Have a Niece

Actually I have several, all talented unique lovely young women, but today I want to tell you about just one of them.

B is very smart – once figured out some kind of math behind some kind of physics that we use every day (I’m lucky to figure out the math behind my bank account); very crafty – spins and weaves and knits and creates all kinds of things; very ecologically-minded – saves and reuses and recycles absolutely everything that she can.

Earlier this year, B moved to Nanaimo BC and promptly got a job in a quilt shop, Serge and Sew.  She had made a quilt or two in the past, and I’d thought she’d done a great job on them.  Well, here’s the picture of one she just recently made for a shop sample:

I think that’s worth a WOW or two, don’t you!

So if you’re ever over in Nanaimo, look up Serge and Sew, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed in their offerings.

Happy to have nieces (and nephews, too)!             Blessings, Peg

It WAS a Super Moon

Yesterday we heard on the news that there was to be a Super Moon last night, a moon that would be 30% bigger and brighter than normal because it is at its closest to earth for the month.  Because it was a clear day, and sure to be a clear evening, we set our clocks so as not to miss it!

It was indeed super bright, so bright it actually made the sky look grey rather than black.  Unfortunately we don’t have a camera that shows the mountains just below the moon.

On first zooming, this is the picture we could get:

002

Then we zoomed in as far as we could:

003

Can you see the expression on Old Man Moon’s face? (Sometimes I can and sometimes I can’t)

Oh, the wonders of nature!                    Blessings, Peg

It’s Been Quite a Week

We’ve been home for a little over a week now, and it’s just flown by!

We started and ended the week helping our DS-K clean up his new home.   What a job!  But it’s clean enough now that he can actually live there, but the cleaning and renos and redecorating will be continuing.  Here’s a picture of behind the fridge before we cleaned it:DSCN1052

K’s mother-in-law actually took charge of the kitchen, and it looks fabulous now!

DDIL-M is away at school,so she is missing out on all the FUN!

So, at the end of the week – carpets are all out, ceilings are almost all painted, floors are vacuumed and washed, kitchen and bathrooms are clean, drains are almost all running freely, lawn is mowed, garbage has been removed, several windows are clean so that we can actually see through them, the small bedroom that K will use temporarily has been painted.  Lots and lots more to do yet – painting will continue, the furnace and water heater will be replaced this week, some windows need to be replaced this week.  But K actually slept in the house for the first time last night!  Welcome home bud!

During the week, Grizz and I tackled a few jobs around the house that were waiting for us – picked and juiced our grapes (sorry, forgot to take a picture), washed the living and dining room drapes (oops, that exposed our windows that are ready for another cleaning), and got started on painting the trim on the outside of the house.

Friday was a day off – and we took full advantage.  We headed out to watch some of our friends and neighbors compete in the BC Senior Games Floor Curling competition:PicMonkey Collage

They came home with a gold medal!  And another friend competed in the bike racing competitions and came home with a gold and a bronze medal.  Not bad for folks in their 70’s and 80’s!

Friday evening we went to the local Fall Fair.  The Midway held its usual fascination for the young and the young-at-heart:DSCN1086

DSCN1084

There was outdoor stage entertainment by a home-grown singer (not our style, so we didn’t stay long)

DSCN1088

We learned that the first night of the fair, there are no animals in the barns yet (will make sure to go on Saturday next year).  But the arts and crafts and horticultural displays were all ready:

DSCN1091

I, of course, particularly liked looking at the quilts – and there were lots of them:

DSCN1093

For the first time ever, I entered a craft project in the fair, the cross-stitch of Kilby Farm (local historic site) that took me several years to complete.  As you can see it got a second place:

In Remembrance

Something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and finally got to it yesterday.

001

It only took a few hours from start to finish, and is now hanging outside on my little flag hanger.

The medals at the top are actually WWI regimental badges that belonged to a great-uncle and a distant cousin, both of whom died in that war.

It’s Poppy Month – do you have your poppy?   Blessings, Peg

Wishing you…..

On this 3rd Sunday of Advent, we celebrate the Joy that was, is, and always will be.  Let the angels sing, let the stars dance!  Abiding Joy came to earth, and lives forever in our hearts!

Today in our home, we have family coming to celebrate together a pre-Christmas, because Grizz and I are heading away to Alberta to be with our children there.  These are always days of such laughter and fun, and especially at Christmas, our joy in each other overflows.  We’ll light the 3rd candle on the wreath, and the candles on the tree – and watch the youngest as her eyes grow big trying to take it all in.  She’s only 8 months old, and it will be a special joy to have a wee one in the house again at Christmas!

010

Wishing you much joy and wonder!              Blessings, Peg

Magazine Day

It was Magazine Day at our house today.  I’m not a big magazine reader, but Grizz definitely is, so there are a lot of magazines around our house most of the time.  But today was extra special in that department.

First off, I won a magazine!  A little bit ago Elizabeth at Cornish Cream hosted a give-away of a magazine, Daphne’s Diary.  It caught my eye, so I commented, and this morning got the news that I won!

So this will apparently be winging its way to me sometime soon.

Then, we stopped at the grocery store this morning, and while checking the magazine aisle as always, there was the newest edition of RV Times, with our article highlighted in  yellow on the cover:

30.Published

And inside on page 20:

31

We feel privileged to have our suggested article accepted, and it’s quite exciting to actually be published!

This is one magazine we’ll be keeping intact (usually I tear out articles we like to keep) alongside the fashion magazine from a number of years ago when our DS1 was posed with a model.

Some  things are just too special to throw away!

Happy magazines!                 Blessings, Peg

Wishing you….

It’s First Advent today – the beginning of the season of looking forward to the celebration of our Lord’s birth.

This first day of celebration we honor the hope that God gave to the world when he promised the coming of Christ, the hope that Christ brought to the world.

In our home we celebrate Advent, each Sunday lighting the successive candle to honor that day:

009

And we spend some time contemplating the Reason for the Season.

Today I wish for all of you that you can know personally the hope that God gave to the world, and the hope of life everlasting.

Because it’s coincidentally also December 1, this is the day we decorate our home for Christmas.  So now, the tree is up, the decorations are everywhere to be seen.  A few weeks ago I shared with you a mantel piece that I’d made, today we completed the ‘scene’:004

And the final touch on our tree is 12 candles – yes, real candles.  Grizz is from Germany, and we’ve kept the German tradition of candles on the tree, 12 of them to recognize the 12 days of Christmas.  Our tree stays up until that 12th day, January 6, Epiphany, the symbol of the day the wise men arrived to bring their gifts to the baby Jesus.  We light the candles occasionally through the season, when we have friends or family in, on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years, Epiphany – and we are very careful, carefully placing the candles, and keeping a vigilant eye on them for the short times that they are lit:

010

Wishing many rich blessings to each and every one of you.     Peg

Home Alone

And no disasters, unlike the movie!!!  LOL!

This is the first day in 5 weeks that I’ve been at home, in the house, all by myself.  Grizz is getting around better and better, and had a dentist appointment this morning.  Because the office is local, I could just drop him off to pick him up later (another week before he’s allowed to drive himself).  He decided to walk from the dentist over to the barber shop, and call me when he was finished there.

So what did I do with my time?  Did I clean house?   Nope!  Did I sew?  Nope!  Did I catch up on reading?  Nope!  Did I coffee with friends?  Nope!  Did I work on some genealogy?  Nope!  Did I tackle any of the pile of projects waiting for me?  Nope!

I made the mistake of opening an on-line game site that I check every so often, and got myself embroiled in a game that stole the time away from me.

I do so enjoy Escape Games – but really, folks, don’t follow my lead unless you really do have the time to waste.  Most games are usually just 15-30 minutes to play, this one though was extra long.

Talking about games, though, I do love puzzles of almost every kind – jigsaw, crossword, logic, quilts – and I can get lost when I get caught up in them.  Every morning (and I excuse this by reasoning that using my brain is warding off Alzheimer’s), I play a crossword puzzle online.  I used to do the ones in the newspaper, but since we started getting the paper on-line, can’t do those any longer.  For a while I played the crossword on FB, but it became not so user-friendly.  Then I found the Reader’s Digest crossword, and get my ‘fix’ daily.

You may have noticed on my side-bar that I’ve added a crossword puzzle.  I can’t remember where I found it, but it was advertised to be put on web-sites, so I tried it and it worked.  It’s there for any of you who may like to do a simple crossword puzzle.  And it is simple, just something to pass a few minutes of time.

Now, though, I WILL go and get some quilting done!

Happy puzzling!                     Blessings, Peg

Christmas is Really Coming

And we know that for sure when the first Christmas Craft Fair opens its doors.  We went to one yesterday:004005006

Oh, the goodies!  Oh, the ideas!  So many lovely items I wanted to take home!  But this was all I bought:

009These won’t actually be used for Christmas decorations, but rather to put on the table outside our front door – in January.  I like to recognize the seasons with front door deco, and these will just do the trick for January.  I’m considering these a birthday gift.

Today is actually my birthday, and the snowmen weren’t my first gift.  A few days ago, Grizz had his first outing when he could drive himself.  He brought these home for me:

010

We put them in our bedroom because it’s cooler there and they might last a little longer that way.  I’ll bring them out to put on the table when the kids come for dinner tonight.

The cool rainy weather has set in, but we’ve had a few reprieves.  On one, I headed out the back door and discovered:

001

These may be the last of the roses to come in the house, and I couldn’t cut the stems very long, because there’s more out there.  I wanted to give them the chance to bloom if it’s going to happen.  It’s a little dicey, because it may get too cold to properly prune back the bush before these bloom.  Oh, well, will enjoy them as long as I can.

On another reprieve, the sun hung a rainbow across the hill just a little way off.  We managed to get this picture:003

The rainbow seemed to make the colors on the hill just that much more brilliant.  I love rainbows, they always remind me of the promises of God.

Happy promises!                      Blessings, Peg

Flying Geese

Yesterday I was out in the yard doing some clean-up, when I heard a noise.

I followed the noise, up, way up, in the sky, and this is what I saw:

Not having my camera right beside me, and knowing the geese would be gone before I got inside and back out again, I stole borrowed this picture from the internet.

I love fall, the colors, the crisp air, the sounds of the geese (going where I wish I could go for a little while).

And isn’t this a good time to use Flying Geese in a quilt?  This is the closest I’ve come lately:

DSCN9936_thumb[1]

A little fuzzy, sorry, but that’s what happens when you try to enlarge a small piece of a picture.  Anyway, this is Circle of Geese, one of Linda’s Stashbuster blocks.

A number of years ago, I did this wall-hanging for my mother:003. Flying geese.jpg

The Flying Geese strips are paper pieced, my first foray into that method, then appliqued on top of the background.

Happy fall!                   Blessings, Peg

O’Keefe Ranch

Vernon is a city through which we’ve driven many times – on our way to somewhere.  But somehow we never had the time to stop.  Well, on this trip, we decided some time there would be a good idea.

So off we headed, with no plan for what to see or where to go, other than a park we’d been told would be well worth the visit.

030.Polson Park, Vernon

Oh, how we would have loved to stroll and picnic there – but: ‘no dogs allowed’.  So that let us out.  We did a drive through and saw lovely gardens, tennis courts, jogging paths, an outdoor stage.  But, oh well.

The water fowl enjoyed a visit from this little girl:034

Then we headed for old downtown, which was lovely with brick sidewalks and shade trees, but nothing caught our eye as a place we wanted to particularly explore.

After that we thought we’d check out some RV parks for future reference, and then we saw the sign:035.O'Keefe Ranch

(Oops, I cut off the top of it).

We’d often talked about visiting this historic site, and now we had our chance (and dogs are welcome!).

036

Much of the lifestyle of the O’Keefes has been preserved in their original mansion:

085.O'Keefe Mansion  087

Here’s just a few glimpses of what’s to be seen inside:090115114093113101

The serving dishes in one display each had a different bouquet of flowers in the center, indicating that they were all hand-painted:

094

An elegant life-style indeed!

Outdoors and in other buildings were displays of various artifacts that showed this elegance wasn’t the rule of thumb, but rather it was a simple life of hard work for most.  For example, these were the kind of stoves they used:

049

Believe it or not, in the first year of our marriage, we lived in a house with a similar type of stove, but it was oil-fueled, not wood-fueled.  So at least I didn’t have to chop wood LOL!

Then there is the blacksmith shop:062

Just look at these bellows, and imagine pumping that rod hour after hour to keep the fire hot:

064

And the cook’s house:

051.Cook's house052

The cook may have prepared the meals to be served in that elegant dining room, but s/he went ‘home’ at the end of the day to a one-room cottage.

As much as the O’Keefe family lived elegantly, I’m sure it took many years of hard work to attain and then maintain that lifestyle.

There is a church and cemetery on the ranch, and I took the opportunity to do a little cemetery crawl.  When I can do some more study of the family history, I’ll share some of that with you.

Happy history!                 Blessings, Peg
