Monday’s ‘Musement

Wish I’d thought of this when our children were young enough to believe it!

Actually when we were expecting our first, I didn’t really worry about whether I could be a good Mom or not.  I just wanted a baby!  That mothering urge and nesting instinct had kicked in after being married a while, and Grizz was in agreement, so we forged ahead.

Did we know our children would need teaching and disciplining and examples and morals?  Well, yes, but we just wanted a baby!

Did we know our teenagers would challenge our authority and test all the limits?  Well, yes, but we just wanted a baby!

Did we know our young adult children would still want some guidance and advice?  Well, yes, but we just wanted a baby!

We knew these things on some level, partly because of our education, partly because we’re both the oldest and our siblings were enough younger that we’d seen some of what our parents did in raising them – aside from what we’d observed as they ‘practiced’ on us LOL!  But these things certainly weren’t uppermost in my mind when we started on the path of producing that first child.  Grizz admits to being somewhat fearful, until he held that little one in his arms the first time and fully realized he didn’t have to teach and discipline and set an example right from minute one, that these things would come over time.

Now, our DD and DSIL are expecting their first, and we’ve chatted with them, and with our sons and their wives as well, about some of the guiding principles that we established over time as we grew into parenthood.  And that’s just what we did – we grew into it.  We weren’t perfect, probably wouldn’t have passed a parenting test if there’d been such even after a few years of raising children, we just did what we thought was best at the time.  As we’ve watched our children become adults and strike out into the world, get married and now starting their families, we have every confidence in them as parents, that they’ll love their children and do their best.  And what else is important?

Happy parenting!               Blessings, Peg

Product Description
Aleksandr Nikitenko, descended from once-free Cossacks, was born into serfdom in provincial Russia in 1804. One of 300,000 serfs owned by Count Sheremetev, Nikitenko as a teenager became fiercely determined to gain his freedom. In this memorable and moving book, here translated into English for the first time, Nikitenko recollects the details of his childhood and youth in servitude as well as the six-year struggle that at last delivered him into freedom in 1824. Among the very few autobiographies ever written by an ex-serf, Up from Serfdom provides a unique portrait of serfdom in nineteenth-century Russia and a profoundly clear sense of what such bondage meant to the people, the culture, and the nation. Rising to eminence as a professor at St Petersburg University, former serf Nikitenko set about writing his autobiography in 1851, relying on his own diaries (begun at the age of fourteen and maintained throughout his life), his father's correspondence and documents, and the stories that his parents and grandparents told as he was growing up.
He recalls his town, his schooling, his masters and mistresses, and the utter capriciousness of a serf's existence, illustrated most vividly by his father's lurching path from comfort to destitution to prison to rehabilitation. Nikitenko's description of the tragedy, despair, unpredictability, and astounding luck of his youth is a compelling human story that brings to life as never before the experiences of the serf in Russia in the early 1800s.

Sewing for Fun

When we got back from our trip, my sewing machine was ready and waiting to be picked up from the LQS where it had gone for its annual tune-up.  I could hardly wait to get back to creating.

First task was to make a cover/stand for the new iPad that our kids had given us:DSCN1074DSCN1072

The pattern is by the Inspired Wren, free on Craftsy.  I did make some changes – instead of a button, I put in an elastic loop on the flap.  Then I made the end of the flap narrower, and added a couple of pieces of Velcro to it and on the front of the cover, so that when the iPad is propped up, the flap angle won’t slip.

Then I started to tackle my scraps bin.  I tend to cut scraps into 2 1/2” strips, which will lend to 2 1/2” squares for future projects.  This seems to be the most common size of strips and squares that I use.

First project up, a Jelly Roll 1600, quilt top done in just a few hours:002

Now I have strips and other bits laid out, trying to decide what I want to do next:001

When we were cleaning out the truck after our trip and before lending it to DS-K for use in getting his house cleaned up, I came across a bag that didn’t look familiar.  Grizz looked at it and said he had no idea what was in it, and then we checked it out.  Well, it was a Christmas gift for me that he had bought when we were in Sisters, OR a couple of months ago.  He’d tucked it away, and then completely forgot about it.  So, for the winter ahead, I have something to keep me occupied for a few days anyway:DSCN1071

Looking forward to that one!

Happy sewing and quilting                                 Blessings, Peg

New Beginnings–May (and a Finish)

Actually I’m going to start with the Finish.  Per my pledge at the beginning of the year, I’ve managed another finish for this month:

Alphabet Story quilt:

003

And when you open the ‘pages’:

004

Each ‘page’ has its own animal, and on the left side, a few more words beginning with that letter:

005

006

The words are written with fabric pen, and more words can be added as grandchildren wish.

But the pledge was first for a new start every month, and now that this one is done, I’m ready to break out the fabrics for another project.  I’ll be making another of these:

138.Diaper bag

Using these fabrics:

007

- to make a diaper bag for little Peanut, due in October.  Cutting begins today!

I’m linking up with Thea at California Dreamin’.

And in case anybody’s wondering – yes, we’re still waiting for little Gracie.  All the efforts earlier this year to help her to be patient until she was strong enough to face the world, worked really, really well apparently.  Due date is not actually for another week, so we know whenever she arrives now, she’s strong and healthy.  Actually on one of her last US exams, she was sticking out her tongue – guess she feels like she’s told us, hey!

Happy beginnings and endings!             Blessings, Peg

Close-Up: How to Read the American City (Phoenix Book; P863)

Product Description
"Grady Clay looks hard at the landscape, finding out who built what and why, noticing who participates in a city's success and who gets left in a 'sink,' or depressed (often literally) area. Clay doesn't stay in the city; he looks at industrial towns, truck stops, suburbsnearly anywhere people live or work. His style is witty and readable, and the book is crammed with illustrations that clarify his points. "Clay's Close-Up, first published in 1973, is still a key book for looking at the real American city. The World of Men

Don’t you just love good service?  I sure do, especially when I have to deal with those things that generally Grizz tends to, and I enter the ‘world of men’.

Grizz right now isn’t allowed to drive, needs a couple more weeks of healing after his knee surgery.  But it was time to get our snow tires put on, just in case we needed to go over the mountains to see my parents.  So off to the tire shop I went.  No problem, tires on, everything checks out – we do need to think about doing a brake job soon.

Three days later, headed out to the vehicle and the wonderful electronic monitoring system displayed a message on the dash that the left front tire was low.  Hmmm…..so I got out to take a look.  That tire looked okay, but the left rear looked a little sad.

So I got Grizz, and we checked the pressure on both tires, filled up the rear tire, and I added another stop at the tire store to my list for the day.

The service rep was more than happy to arrange to check the tire out, and in the end they replaced the valve stem thinking it might be leaking, but otherwise couldn’t see any problems.  Okay, good to go!

Two days later, the same tire is low again (but the monitor still said to check the front tire????), so back to the tire store – this time they decided that there was a little bit of corrosion around the rim, so they cleaned that out and put everything back together again.

Another three days, and a trip to Costco and back, and now the monitoring system says the left rear tire is low.  Again, checked the pressure manually – I’m getting really good at this! – it looked okay, but stopped at the tire store anyway to ask them to double-check the pressure for me.  They were, once again, more than happy to do that and I pulled the van into the service bay.

A nice young man checked the pressure on both front and rear tires on the left side, which were all okay, then said he’d check the other side.  Wouldn’t you know the right front tire was obviously a little low.  Hmmmm…..so why does the monitor say it’s the left rear.  Solution, maybe the sensors need to be reset.  Oh, who knew?!  So after testing to ascertain that in fact when the right front tire is low, the system thinks it’s the left rear, this fellow did some fancy-dancy playing with an electronic gizmo, then retested the system by letting air out of a tire to see if the monitor displayed the message for the correct tire, he’s happy that all is fixed.

That was two days ago.  The tire pressure seems to be holding.  When I go back for the brake job, they’ve assured me they’ll check all the tires once again while they have them off the vehicle.

Through all of this, I never once felt that any of these men thought that I was just a ditzy broad who didn’t have a clue what she was talking about.  Never once felt condescension or neglect from any of them.  They all seemed concerned that I would be safe on the road, and treated me respectfully.  It was, all in all, a happy experience.

So, now I know for sure how to use a tire pressure gauge,

know what the pressure is supposed to be on my tires, know where to find that information – and know where to go to get service when I have a problem.

Lessons learned, and so happy to have found a great tire shop with fabulous service – and they never once groaned when they saw me coming!

Happy service!           Blessings, Peg

April Finish and Baby Sewing

which was also my April Start

010

Baby Gracie’s quilt – design and color-way selected by DD.  The fabrics in rows 3 and 6 (from the top) are already used in the baby room, so some coordination happening here.

18.Baby room

The room is all decorated, furnished, supplied and just waiting now for Gracie to appear.  Just a few weeks to go!  Gracie is not her name (we don’t know that yet), but will be the name I’ll use for her on my blog.

I quilted daisies into the corner posts and the crosses:

011012

Kind of softens the angles, I think.

And sewing has begun for baby Peanut (DS1 and DDIL2), due in October.  First up – diapers, 3 dozen are on the go right now.  Then plans to sew receiving blankets, burp cloths, nursing pads, take-along change pads, changing-pad covers (see the chevron fabric on the right in Gracie’s room), crib sheets, diaper bag, sleep sacks, car-seat snuggies (Gracie will need one of these too in the fall).

It’s an adventure – and so good to keep busy while we’re waiting so the time goes by faster!

Happy baby sewing!                Blessings, Peg

Sisters Quilt Show part X

Coming to the end.  I hope you’ve enjoyed the show, and really truly hope that someday you’ll have the opportunity to see it for yourself, if you haven’t already.  It’s truly amazing, and worth the visit.

Be prepared, though, for crowds and heat (I did hear that one year it rained on the show, but think that was a rare occurrence for this area at this time of the year).

The vendors were there, so you could shop – for quilts and fabrics and crafts and food and…… Did I shop?  Yes, but found I was so overwhelmed with it all, and getting very tired with the heat, that I only bought one small piece of fabric.

At a lovely oasis in the center of town, there was an opportunity to get out of the heat – and be entertained:

Monday’s ‘Musement

I laughed till I peed my pants!

I guess, according to this, I’m not a real woman.

My house is only clean for the first 5 minutes after I clean it, and I refuse to clean every 5 minutes.  Organized – well, yes, if nobody else moves anything from where I put it.

I’m dressed…..by noon each day, well-dressed only on occasion.  And my hair only looks ‘done’ for the first 5 minutes after I leave the hairdresser, and then it’s anybody’s guess what the style is.

I behave gracefully for the first 5 minutes in all circumstances, other than that, well, let’s just say I have my own way of doing things.   And, yes, I’ve been known to swear, but let’s not go there!

Patience – well, sigh, if I have to wait, have to understand, have to tolerate, have to agree for 5 minutes…..then yes, I have all the patience in the world, and I smile through it all, yes, I do, that smile is painted on my face and nobody and nothing will take it away for at least 5 minutes.  There’s always something nice about everybody in the first 5 minutes after meeting them, isn’t there???

It’s a dream, and I can aspire to a dream, and dream that it’ll come true someday.  In the meantime, I just keep trying.  Maybe someday I’ll get there.

Happy dreams!                  Blessings, Peg

Wednesday’s Words and HodgePodge

It’s been a while since my last HodgePodge – no excuses, just is.  If you want to read more HodgePodge, follow the link on my sidebar.

1. When it comes to good manners, what two top your list of most important?

Opening doors for others, and stepping aside to allow the other person to pass.  I just think these show so much consideration and respect, especially if the other person is older, or has some obvious impediment (including carrying a large load of groceries).

2. Let's open a proverbial can of worms...Common Core.  Are you familiar with the term (talking education reform in the USA)?  If so, care to share your thoughts? In your opinion, what is one of the biggest issues schools (in your home country) face today?

Haven’t heard of this before, so right now no comment.  But as for issues in schools today – probably lack of discipline, not just on the part of teachers, but parents as well.  I really think teachers’ jobs would be so much easier if the children came to school with a sense of self-discipline and respect for others.  And parents need to respect the teachers’ need to discipline, just in order to keep some semblance of order in a classroom of 25-30+ children.  I could go on, but I’ll stop there.

3. Name a celebrity whose fashion sense you admire and share why.

I pay so little attention to celebrities, I can’t even begin to answer.

4. How are you affected by the changing seasons?

I find I enjoy the changing seasons, each one brings its own beauty and enjoyment.  I also find at the beginning of each new season, I’m inspired to do things like clean and organize and start new projects.  It’s kind of like a new beginning for me as well as for the world around me.

5. Scariest book you've ever read?

I avoid scary – books, movies, TV shows. Even at Halloween, this is much more my style:

6. What time of day are you most hungry? What's your go-to snack?

Most hungry around 3-4 in the afternoon, must be a left-over from the childhood after-school snacks.  My go-to snack will almost always be chocolate if it’s around (so I tend to not keep it in the house), if not that, then I like cheese and crackers.

7. Do you lean more towards being too needy or too independent? Which do you find harder to deal with in others?

I think I tend to be more independent, and actually get resentful of others trying to ‘help’ at times.  Probably why I find needy people annoying.

8.  Insert your own random thoughts here.

I think I have always done crafts of one sort or another.  Knitting was first, as a bunch of us wandered around the school yard with yarn in our pockets and needles in our hands (can you imagine schools letting kids have knitting needles these days?).  Then I learned to crochet, and I made everything I could think of – doilies and tablecloths and sweaters and even a blouse.  At one of those home sales parties, I picked up a cross-stitch, and fell in love.  Other needlework like embroidery and needlepoint is okay, but cross-stitch is my passion, and it’s rare now for me to not have a cross-stich project on the go.

Actually right now, I don’t have a cross-stitch project going.  The hand-work I’m doing now is needlepoint, but only because I fell in love with the picture, thinking it was cross-stitch, saved the pattern for years until this past summer when I pulled it out and read the materials list. But, I still want the project, so I’m forging ahead – a little over 2/3 finished now

Doesn’t that just warm your heart thinking about having it on your mantel for Christmas!     I can hardly wait to put it all together.

Happy crafting!           Blessings, Peg

A Camp Cook

When we’re at home, Grizz does almost all of the cooking.  It’s a hobby for him, and he’s a much better cook than I am.  And it frees me up to do the things I like to do like – quilt, of course!

But on the road, I do more of the cooking, not sure why, but that just seems to be the way it works out.  This week, I was reading a novel, and a character was looking for something to make for lunch and put together things that he found in his fridge.  But it sounded so yummy I just had to try it.  And – for those of you that know me well and know that I’m generally tied to following a recipe – I even made a few adjustments, based on what was in our fridge.

I started with sauté-ing some mushrooms and set them aside002

Then on to frying up some onions and peppers001

Add a few bits of left over bacon003

In the meantime, I whipped some eggs with cream cheese, added salt and pepper, and into the pan they went along with the mushrooms and some olives and cook it all up

004

Plate it with some cold pea salad, and a slice of bread005

And voila – a simple camping style meal.  Albeit on the stove in our RV and not on a campfire the way real campers would do, but it WAS delicious!

Happy camp cooking!                 Blessings, Peg

Movin’ On Up

…….We finally have a piece of the pie!

Do you remember that old song from the TV show The Jeffersons?

Well, we finally have a piece of the pie.  Apple pie that is!  As in Apple computer technology.

While in Alberta, our DD-A and DSIL-J presented us with:074.IPad075076

They’re determined to keep us up to date with technology, and now we can FaceTime with them and LV!

Now the fun begins – learning how to use this new toy, and now I get to make an iPad cover for myself!

Happy moving with the times!              Blessings, Peg

Happy 65 Years

On Saturday, some of the family and a few friends gathered to celebrate with my parents the coming occasion of their 65th anniversary!

Today is actually their date, but weekends work better for get-togethers, plus several of us had commitments that precluded actually gathering ON the day.

But we had a wonderful time!  The immediate family that couldn’t be there, and much of the extended family and friends sent greetings, and one of my sisters was able to make a Skype call.  PM Stephen Harper sent his greetings as well, thanks to the efforts of my sister (there will be more coming, but time was short and this was the only one to arrive on time).

We read aloud all the cards and greetings that were received, and then read a letter my mother had written to my father – such love, and so many memories!

So today, special greetings and congratulations to my parents, Margaret and Frank, on this day that is uniquely theirs to celebrate!011

And their plans for today???  They’re going to the PNE, where they would have gone back in the days when they were courting.  And then they have a small bottle of champagne to toast each other!

Congratulations   Mom and Dad!

A Quilter’s Groundhog Day

Do we really need an excuse?

Leaving, But We’ll Be Back

Heading for home….

After 10 days with our kids and little LV, we’re actually going through a little bit of withdrawal.  We’d become accustomed to the idea of our children having grown up and moved on with their lives, but now with a new baby and another one coming, we want nothing more than to hold them all close and not let go.

But there was lots of time holding, feeding, playing with LV:238

And I went with DDIL-K for her US – a real-time glimpse of Eli, but still no idea whether it’s a he or a she.  Only 10 weeks to wait until we know.

There was also a baby shower for DDIL-K, lots of fun and amazingly coordinated gifts received:

41

Grizz did some work on the baby room closet, and we helped put together a new filing cabinet so ‘stuff’ could be moved out of the baby room so that ‘baby stuff’ can be moved in and set up.

We did take time for some touring around and visited The Saskatoon Farm, which is so much more than just a saskatoon farm.  They have a gift store, bakery, art gallery, farmer’s market, restaurant, plant nursery, as well as u-pick berries and fruits in season.  And the best saskatoon berry pies ever!

And the view over the Old Man and Bow Rivers is spectacular:165
